Birth Defects are abnormalities of structure which affects the functions of the body or the body's metabolism.

There are many types of Defects, such as Genetic Birth Defects or Prenatal Birth Defects.

Birth Defects can be genetically passed down, caused by illnesses, congenital infections and they can be caused by drugs, smoking and the use of alcohol.

The Defects stated below are the two most common Birth Defects worldwide:

Congenital Heart Defect: Congenital Heart Defects are Genetic Defects that can either affect the arteries and veins around the heart, the valves in the heart and the interior walls in the heart. Heart Defects range from little, un-noticeable defects to life threatening Defects. Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) affects eight of every one thousand babies born each day. Treatments have been found for this, but many babies are born with this Defect, whether it be small or fatal. There are more than one million children born each year that have Congenital Heart Defect.

Neural Tube Defect: Neural Tube Defects are Defects that are caused within the first the first couple of weeks a Neural Tube Defects (NTD) are caused by an opening in the brain and or spinal cord. This then creates a Neural Tube, and when it does not close, it is called a NTD. NTD affects more than 324 000 births each year. There have been a couple of solutions to this number one most common Genetic Birth Defect.

Chromosome Abnormalities are when there is an accident in the production of the egg and the sperm. There are two main chromosome abnormalities such as accidents in the sperm and egg or they can occur later (after conception). A Chromosome Abnormality is Down Syndrome. Chromosomes that have abnormalities can delay mental and physical development. It has been scientifically proven that 70% of miscarriages are due to chromosomes abnormalities.
